HfX housing studies centre | housing research | Yerevan, Armenia 03/03/2026

Heghine Pilosyan from the HfX Housing Studies Centre recently conducted a fascinating study comparing two identical Soviet-era kindergartens with very different fates. While one was inhabited chaotically by those in need of housing, the other was intentionally reimagined by Electric Architects.
Our redesign focused on "unlocking" the building’s hidden potential: basements were opened up to let in natural light, private courtyards were created for ground-floor residents, attic additions allowed for stunning double-height rooms and private terraces.

Check out how thoughtful architecture can transform rigid structures into vibrant, livable homes.

the design narrative extends into the most private spaces, where the restrooms mimic the clandestine allure of vintage corridors through a curated chaos of funky mirrors and intricate mosaics. by bridging the gap between a neighborhood institution and a design-forward destination, the new simona provides a world-class stage for armenian hospitality that is structurally immersive and unapologetically bold. every piece of refurbished furniture and vintage lighting was curated to add a tactile, domestic warmth to an otherwise sharp, industrial-leaning shell.

at the structural heart of the venue is the “zero ground” contact bar, a centerpiece designed to eliminate traditional barriers and foster a democratic, communal atmosphere. every element of the floor plan radiates from this central point, crowned by a dynamic led ticker that pulses with the room’s energy and casts a cinematic glow over stainless steel and glass surfaces. the layout acts as both a literal and metaphorical hearth, facilitating a “simona gathers” ethos through a precise integration of light, metal, and movement.

the redesign of simona marks a strategic shift from its “accessible” origins to a high-concept, sophisticated environment that aligns the bar’s physical form with its status as a nightlife institution. the architectural narrative is defined by a masterclass in monochromatic complexity, utilizing a layered red palette across velvet, gloss, and matte finishes to create depth within an industrial-leaning shell. this aesthetic is balanced by “modern kitsch” elements, featuring salvaged sofas reborn with rhythmic patterns and repurposed soviet-era industrial lamps that function as reflective surfaces.

youth sports and community centre

internally, the center prioritizes flexibility through a series of multifunctional spaces that adapt to everything from competitive sports training to educational workshops and community meetings. these versatile halls are balanced by open public areas designed to encourage spontaneous interaction and local engagement, making the building more than just a gym—it is a “living room” for the town. by blending athletic rigor with social infrastructure, the center provides a sustainable model for empowering armenian youth and fostering a resilient, connected community through shared activity.
