Kabul Small Animal Rescue

Ella and Diva are Deana’s puppies. She kept them safe despite having two broken legs on the street and being smaller than most other street dogs. Their siblings have homes. Deana has a home. And Traveling Tails Dog Rescue has blessedly kept them safe at a foster home for two years. But they need a home of their own.

A few weeks ago, we shared that Ella & Diva had officially spent two years in rescue. 💔

We hoped that post would be the one.

We hoped someone would see them.

We hoped their family was finally out there.

But today...

They're still waiting.

Ella and Diva have watched so many dogs come and go while they continue to wait for the one thing every rescue dog deserves—a family of their own.

They're not overlooked because they aren't wonderful.

They're overlooked because they're honest dogs.

They need a quiet, adult-only home. They need patience. They need someone willing to let trust grow instead of expecting it overnight.

And you know what?

That's okay.

Not every dog is meant for every home.

But somewhere, there is a home that will be perfect for **them**.

Ella is the sweet soul who melts into belly rubs and gently offers her paw when she wants your attention.

Diva is the goofy protector who rolls all over pillows in the morning, "chases bunnies" in her sleep, and loves with everything she has once she knows you're hers.

Together, they are loyal, intelligent, funny, and completely devoted to the people they trust.

We're not looking for **any** adopter.

We're looking for **their** adopter.

The one who sees two incredible dogs instead of two challenges.

The one who understands that the deepest bonds are often the ones that take a little time.

We need to pay our staff. With an average salary of under $300 a month, it shouldn't be so hard. It's not easy for them to support their families on these salaries right now, but it should be a little easier than it is to recognize the skill and necessity of their work and be able to pay them fairly for it.

Our vets have performed over a hundred surgeries this month, and far more vaccinations. Our caretaker teams have kept over 450 animals alive and thriving. Our cooks have made well over 25,000 meals. And they've done all of this in the tightening vice of an economy squeezed by conflict and supply shortages.

Being as sick as I am right now, I'm even less charming and understanding than usual, and I'm exhausted. I'm not the only one that's exhausted, not by a long shot, but the buck stops with me when it comes to funding our operations each month, and it's easier to compose the letters and messages that convey the quality and scale and imperative of our work when I don't want to hurl on my computer.

I have high hopes of finishing the final fundraisers with time enough to get a jump on July's. I want to make sure that the hardworking staff we have are paid, our animals are fed, and that maybe, just maybe, I can take a couple days off for my birthday this week.

This work is important because these animals are important, even if they're unseen and voiceless. They live in some of the harshest conditions in the world and they deserve as much help as we can possibly give them.

Julia's brood of kittens and adopted orphans are growing fast and she's amazingly patient with their antics. Raising newborns is an incredible amount of work, for mama Julia and also for the staff. Our medicine fundraiser is done--thank you! So many animals benefit from this, in small and large ways, whether it's basic vaccinations or routine spay/neuter surgeries or complex long term care or life-saving emergency surgeries.

Tango is one of the dogs that has benefited from your help, he wouldn't be alive without your help and without the dedicated veterinary staff that have cared for him. He's been with us almost 7 weeks now and his severe embedded collar wounds, deep and fully circumferencing his neck, have required daily sedated bandage change and wound dressing. There is now just a very small shallow part of the wound on the underside of his neck that isn't yet healed, a pretty stubborn area to treat, but we know it will heal, and in the meantime he has blossomed and become a happy, affectionate puppy in the loving care of our staff.

You have really blown us away this week with your support and generosity. Just a few days ago it seemed almost impossible and we didn't know how we would pay our bills and feed the animals in our care. It's a horrible feeling, that unrelenting stress and worry. But you've come through for us with compassion and generosity, and I'm hopeful that you'll help us finish the remaining fundraisers quickly. It's hard to express what a relief that would be.
